INTRODUCTION

Located on The University of Queensland's main St Lucia campus, the TESOL division of ICTE-UQ was established under a grant from the Australia-Japan Foundation in 1981 as the first ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) centre in the state of Queensland and one of the first six ELICOS centres in Australia.

The programs and services offered by ICTE-UQ have expanded and diversified markedly since the early 1980s and the formal establishment of the Institute in 1996. The Institute's TESOL division has gained considerable recognition and acknowledgment in the fields of English language training and TESOL teacher training and professional development both in national and international contexts since the mid-1980s. The Continuing Education division of ICTE-UQ has developed extensive experience in short course educational travel, community education and continuing professional/vocational/technical education programs.

The Institute has also established a strong reputation for the development and delivery of quality support services and tailor-made study tour and customised training programs. More than 7,000 international and domestic students, teachers, tourists, professionals and community people from 35+ countries participated in ICTE-UQ programs and services in 2006.

ABOUT ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING AT ICTE-UQ

ICTE-UQ has been involved in the provision of English language training for General, Academic, Business and Special Purposes at The University of Queensland since 1981. ICTE-UQ is accredited by NEAS (National ELT Accreditation Scheme), is a member of the National ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) Association, English Australia, and is government registered.
ICTE-UQ has an average sessional enrolment of approximately 550 students from more than 45 countries around the world, including students from Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Participants include overseas students, working holidaymakers, tourists, business people and professionals.

TEACHING

ICTE-UQ employs a teaching staff of qualified and experienced language instructors with diverse teaching and educational backgrounds. The ICTE-UQ Resource Centre provides print and audio materials which can be borrowed for home study. A computer laboratory is used for teaching during class hours and is available for individual student use outside class times.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Presentations by guest speakers, excursions, films etc. are organised to give students the opportunity to learn about various aspects of Australia and an end-of-session BBQ/function is arranged for students as part of the regular English programs (General English, AECS, EAP, EIBC, ESP:TESOL and ESP:BEP). Some evening and weekend sporting and social activities are arranged outside class hours by the Activities Officer. These activities are self-funded by students.

In addition to the regular intensive full-time English courses, ICTE-UQ offers English language training and Study Tour programs to groups of overseas students and professionals. ICTE-UQ has the flexibility to custom design group programs to meet the requirements of the client institution or organisation.

CLASS SIZE

Class sizes range from 12-18, with an average class size of 13-14 students. All course materials are provided during class, although students are required to purchase a recommended learner's English dictionary.
