Social Work
General Overview Social Work
The real meaning of social work is often misunderstood as sociology. Both sociology and social work belong to same social studies but differ in many ways. Social work is all about people. Social workers are professionally qualified staff who assess the needs of service users and plan the individual packages of care and support that best help them. Becoming a social worker involves taking an honours degree in social work and registering with the General Social Care Council. The universities prepare students for an ethical, competent, critically reflective, innovative, anti oppressive, accountable, effective social work practitioners at all levels. The prerequisite for social work are compassion and equality towards humans and willingness to help them.
Specialization of studies and mode of education in Social Work
Social work is a very open field and there are many areas of study in various geographies of the world.
Some of the fields of social work are community development, community education and pedagogy, human rights, international relations, relationship education, social action, social change, social justice, policy analysis, mediation and neighborhood development. The mode of education is very practical. Students work as group to visit various socially under developed areas to work with the people to improve the condition.
Career paths of Social Work
Almost most of the careers in the field of social work are same. There might be differences in the location of work but not in the nature of work. The pay scale differs according to the employer. The nongovernmental organizations pay quite well apart from providing accommodations and other expenses. Employments can be found in family and children’s services, health and rehabilitation, mental health, information and referral, occupational social work, juvenile and adult corrections, gerontological services, school social services, housing, income maintenance, and community development. Social workers typically work as clinical social worker, advisor, counselor, practitioner, mental health specialist, relationship specialist, community developer, and many such positions.
