Gender Studies
What is gender studies?
Gender studies is a relatively new field of interdisciplinary study that arose in the 1950s, a time when women were becoming a major part of the workforce. Gender studies investigates various aspects of gender and is related to other fields of sociology, such as racial and ethnic studies and sexuality studies. It is important to distinguish that gender studies does not necessarily refer to whether a person is female or male, but rather the social, economic, and cultural paradigms that are associated with them, such as gender roles. Analysing these issues is important to understanding behavioural patterns and prejudice, as well as paving the way for true equality between women and men.
The future of gender studies
A university degree in gender studies is useful for those who want to work in social careers, human resources, or in the field of psychology, to name but a few. Many schools offer a bachelor's and master's degree, and some offer more advanced degrees in the field of gender studies, as this field is gaining prominence.
