The major areas of employment are educational institutions, research organizations, communication and media companies, law and order, business institutions including profit based and nonprofit organizations. The pay scale for historians varies from sector to sector. Historians working with media companies and research institutions earn much higher than in educational institutions and law. Some of the typical career profiles for historians are analyst, archivist, advertising executive, Foreign Service officer, foundation staffer, public relations officer, researchers, intelligence agent, legal assistant and much more.
